Reducing Weight Load

Turner Construction’s history includes a chapter dedicated to rebar. The
company’s founder, Henry C. Turner, helped pioneer the use of rebar in
reinforced concrete construction at the turn of the 20th century.

When designing Turner’s new corporate offices, the design firm (Gensler) chose
to honor this material in a branded feature wall by using rebar to create a gabion
wall. In a traditional gabion wall, wire mesh is filled with rocks a foot or more
thick. For this application, we needed to keep the weight down and create the
illusion of a gabion wall without the bulk of so much rock. We accomplished this
by using adhesive to attach rocks to flat boards and then layering the rebar grid
on top.
